The different types of tanks for vapers

Cartomizers

The first style of cartomizers were for e-cigs (cigalikes) and look like cigarette butts. They are cylindrical and screw into the battery portion. These are no longer popular but some may still be around.

Clearomizers consist of a small tank for the e-liquid. Inside the tank is a central tube that attaches to a wick-and-coil-containing the atomizer head. They have a transparent tank (so you can see how much e-juice remains) that screws apart from the top or bottom for refilling with e-liquid. They are very simple to use.

Standard Tanks

A tank is basically a big clearomizer. The liquid reservoirs in vape tanks tend to be between 1.6ml and 5ml depending on the manufacturer. The coil is still replaceable in the same way, and the majority of vape tanks use a bottom-coil design.

Sub Ohm Tanks

Sub ohm tanks are pretty much the same as standard tanks but their coils have a resistance that is lower than one Ohm. This means they can cope with higher wattages and will generally boost flavour and vapour production.

Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers (RDA)

RDAs strip an atomizer down to its most basic form, forgetting about the liquid reservoir and focusing on the coil and wick. With no tank, the e-liquid is dripped directly onto the coil. When the wick starts to dry out, just add more liquid. These are mainly used by long-term vape users.

Rebuildable Tank Atomizers (RTA)

This type of tank is the most popular due to its ease of use and convenience. Add a tank for your e-juice to an RDA and you get an RTA. Inside the tank, you have a smaller version of an RDA’s deck. You connect your coils in exactly the same way or use pre-built coils for convenience. Charge your battery, fill up and vape all day. These are perfect for beginners.

How to REFILL vaping tanks

The steps to refill most tanks are similar.

  • Remove tank from the battery.
  • Remove mouthpiece from the tank.
  • Tilt tank.
  • Pour e-liquid inside the tank.
  • Pour e-liquid to top mL marking at most.
  • Screw on the mouthpiece and start vaping.

Is there a difference between tanks and sub-ohm tanks?

The main difference in tanks is that they are designed to offer different experiences. A classic or normal tank mimics the sensation of a normal cigarette, thus giving you a powerful throat-hit. They can also use high nicotine e-liquid which is suitable for satisfying heavy smokers. Sub-Ohm vaping offers a much smoother draw and generally uses a lower nicotine content e-liquid due to the amount of vapour or ‘cloud’ produced. The higher the VG content the smoother the vape. These tank coils have a lower resistance of less than 1 Ohm and burn with a higher wattage.

User Benefits

Sub-Ohming benefits:
Much denser clouds due to a high VG liquid and a much smoother inhale. Due to the density of the cloud, you get more of the e-liquid flavour when compared to classic vaping.

Classic Tank benefits:
Perfect for quitting the habit as the throat hit is similar
